Naval & Medium size Ships Business Unit proudly plays a pioneering role in Korea's naval self-reliance and defense export initiatives, while driving the global medium-sized vessel market forward.

Naval &
Medium size Ships

We are elevating the global standing of K-Shipbuilding by pioneering overseas markets with state-of-the-art naval and medium-sized shipbuilding and advanced MRO technology.

In December 2025, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries(HHI) officially launched the Naval & Medium size Ships Business Unit through a strategic merger with HD Hyundai Mipo.
By integrating the Naval Ship Division, a global leader in the naval defense market, with HD Hyundai Mipo(Medium size Ship Division), a pioneer in the medium-sized and special purpose vessel markets, the new business unit is positioned to respond more flexibly to rapidly shifting market dynamics while maximizing operational synergies.

Naval Ship Division of HHI was designated as Korea’s first marine defense contractor and successfully developed Korea’s first indigenous frigate, the ROKS Ulsan. In 2007, we became the world’s third shipbuilder to construct a 7,600-ton Aegis destroyer, earning global recognition for our top-tier technology. In 2024, we delivered the first 8,200-ton Batch-ll Aegis destroyer, 'Jeongjo the Great' to the Republic of Korea Navy on schedule. We are also leading the development of the Korea Destroyer Next Generation (KDDX).
We were the first company outside Germany to successfully construct a 214-class submarine equipped with air-independent propulsion (AIP), followed by the on-schedule delivery of a 3,000-ton class submarine. We are now focusing our capabilities on developing future-oriented naval assets such as manned-unmanned teaming (MUM-T) systems, unmanned platforms, and next-generation warships that will be game changers in naval warfare.
We began Korea’s naval vessel export journey with the delivery of an auxiliary ship to New Zealand in 1987. Since then, we have led the way in K-defense exports by developing export-standard models and carrying out major projects such as the Philippine Navy modernization program and Peru’s local shipbuilding initiative.

Medium size Ship Division of HHI began its journey in 1975, specializing in ship repair and conversion. Over two decades, it achieved a remarkable track record, successfully completing projects for approximately 8,200 vessels. In the late 1990s, the unit made a full-scale entry into the newbuilding market and has since continued its steady growth, delivering around 1,400 vessels to date.
With superior technological expertise and uncompromising quality, we have secured a dominant position in the global market for Medium-Range Product/Chemical Tankers.
Our diverse portfolio of premium vessels ranging from Feeder to Panamax Container Carriers, medium-size Gas Carriers, and Pure Car and Truck Carriers (PCTC) to RO-RO Passenger—is delivered to satisfied customers all around the world. We are also pioneering the construction of next-generation vessels, including hybrid-electric propulsion ships, ammonia-powered vessels, and LCO2 carriers.

Moving forward, Naval & Medium size Ships Business Unit will expand into overseas MRO services, providing total solutions “from shipbuilding to maintenance, repair, and operation.” We aim to establish a marine defense belt across the Indo-Pacific, building a global network for K-Shipbuilding and K-Defense.
